Breast Cancer Awareness Month

As most of you know October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Many in our Sunday School class have been touched by this in some way. I have known at least 3 friends who have lost mothers to this horrible disease. We have been asked, as a class, to help support Jill in her endeavor to eliminate this disease and wear pink Sunday to church. So, ladies and men alike, please find something pink in your closet to wear this Sunday, October 10. If you do not have any pink, Jill will bring pink ribbons to pin onto your lapel.

In Him,

Kathy

How to make a difference

To close out his Next 2010 conference message, “The Church,” Kevin DeYoung gave a list of suggestions for how to be a difference maker in the local church. He said:

• Find a good local church.
• Get involved.
• Become a member.
• Stay there as long as you can.
• Put away thoughts of a revolution for a while.
• Join the plodding visionaries.
• Go to church this Sunday and worship in Spirit and truth.
• Be patient with your leaders.
• Rejoice when the gospel is faithfully proclaimed.
• Bear with those who hurt you.
• Give people the benefit of the doubt.
• Say “hi” to the teenager that no one notices.
• Welcome the old ladies with the blue hair and the young men with tattoos.
• Volunteer for the nursery.
• Attend the congregational meeting.
• Bring your fried chicken to the potluck like everybody else.
• Invite a friend.
• Take a new couple out for coffee.
• Give to the Christmas offering.
• Sing like you mean it.
• Be thankful someone vacuumed the carpet for you.
• Enjoy the Sundays that “click.”
• Pray extra hard on the Sundays that don’t.
• And in all of this, do not despise the days and weeks and years of small things (Zechariah 4:8–10).

Just a few ideas to help each of us make a difference in the life of our church and church family.

A few hymns to contemplate

Tis so Sweet to Trust in Jesus

Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to take Him at His word,
Just to rest upon His promise,
Just to know "Thus saith the Lord."
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I've proved Him o'er and o'er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more!

Blessed Assurance

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine.
O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long;
This is my story this is my song, Praising my Savior all the day long.

Victory in Jesus

I head an old, old story, how a Savior came from glory,
How He gave His life on Calvary to save a wretch like me:
I heard about His groaning, of His precious blood's atoning, T
hen I repented of my sins and won the victory.
O victory in Jesus, my Savior, forever,
He sought me and bo't me with His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him, and all my love is due Him,
He plunged me to victory beneath the cleansing flood.

Messengers of hope

I was listening to the radio the other day as the DJ's were talking about "aww" moments regarding the children in our lives. People were calling in from everywhere to tell their story and God put it on my heart to share this with the class. I hope that my story will bless you in some way and even encourage you during your hard times.

In the weeks and months leading up to the time before Anderson, Georgia & I moved to Rabun County, I was totally lost. I had discovered that my husband of almost 5 years was having an affair and wanted to live the kind of life that I wanted no part of. Incomprehensible in my mind. The kids and I no longer fit into his lifestyle and I did not know what to do. One evening I went outside after I put the kids to bed and just poured my heart out to God. I cried and I cried and I begged for God to change my circumstance. I did not understand why these things were happening to me and to my children.

I was so scared and felt so alone. It felt a lot like the fear that I got as a child in my room at night during a hurricane or tornado. I would hide under my covers until I fell asleep sometimes. Other times my mom would come in and turn on a night light and remind me that I was safe and that nothing would harm me.

As I sat there asking God why He left me all alone and why He would allow such things to happen in my life, I heard this little voice. It was Anderson, up to that point he had never gotten out of his bed after being tucked in, and to this day the words that he spoke still bring a smile to my face. He said, “Look mommy, God turned the light on for you”. He was talking about the moon.

Isaiah 66:13 “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you…”

Just when I needed to be reminded of Gods unfailing love, there it was. In the voice of my then 3 year old son, God reminded me that He was there just as He always had been and always will be to comfort me. God reminded me that He is my hiding place and that I can trust in Him.

Psalms 32:7 “You are my hiding place; You will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.”

God is so good, even as I mourned the death of my marriage, He sent me a little messenger of hope in my time of need.

Think about it. Every hardship that we endure is chronicled by someone God sent to help us though it.

God does allow us to go through hard times, but it is only to make us stronger and to build a greater appreciation in our lives. We learn valuable lessons during our times of suffering. God also wants us to rely on Him during these times because when we try to fix it ourselves and with our own understanding we fail, not God.

As I learn more and more everyday to trust Him with my hardships I think about what belongs to Him. My worries and fears belong to Him, and how dare I grasp at things that belong to Him.

1 Peter 5:7 "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."

Thank You Father for taking care of me and teaching me all along the way. Thank You for not allowing those difficult times in my life to consume and destroy me. I know that You see the big picture of my life and that You know what You are doing. Help me to look at my life situations as a blessing and not a curse. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Ecclesiates 3:1-8

This is what is on my heart right now...
Please be in prayer for the Webb family.

To everything there is a season, and
a time to every purpose under heaven:

A time to be born, and
a time to die;
a time to plant, and
a time to pluck up
that which is planted;

A time to kill, and
a time to heal;
a time to break down, and
a time to build up;

A time to weep, and
a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and
a time to dance;

A time to cast away stones, and
a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and
a time to refrain from embracing;

A time to get, and
a time to lose;
a time to keep, and
a time to cast away;

A time to rend, and
a time to sow;
a time to keep silence, and
a time to speak;

A time to love, and
a time to hate;
a time of war; and
a time of peace.

New study to start Sunday

Hi everyone!

We have finished the book of Ester and will be starting a new book this Sunday. Steve has prayed and feels like 1 Peter will be a good study for our class.

Couple of reminders:

We have nursing home duty this coming Sunday. If you can be there, please do so. It means a lot to the residents and to the deacon serving.

Also, please remember to bring a fruit or vegetable tray by Thursday to the MAC kitchen for Faye Cates' memorial luncheon. Thank you in advance for your help.

One note of praise. Rick Story has officially rejoined Clayton Baptist Church. We have been blessed to have him in our class for quite a while now. And we are thrilled that he has felt led to move his membership back "home".

See you all Sunday!

Welcome Graham Romaine Anderson

Sunday morning, Stefanie and Devin Anderson welcomed their third son, Graham to the world. I know that they are over the moon with this new addition to their family. I had the privilege of seeing him yesterday and he is a doll. Please continue to pray for them as they manage a newborn and for big brothers Bo and G.B. God is good!
